Snook Season

Author: Redfish, 09 08th, 2008

I really enjoy fishing for snook. These fish fight so hard that every fish feels like a monster. This week end was my first time out since the season opened and what a great day it was. The boat ran well there was plenty of bait and the water was flat calm.

I haven’t been on the water many weeks so my Garmin GPSMap 540s came in handy. I went to the waypoints section of the GPS and picked my favorite snook spot and off we went. By the end of the day we caught plenty of fish and enjoyed some great company.

Marine transducers

A transducer is an electronic device that converts one type of energy to another.  Marine transducers perform many useful functions when it comes to fishing and all things nautical.  Some serve as fish finding devices; others map depth, speed and temperature.

There are some very sophisticated marine transducers available at Marine GPS center with user-friendly interfaces, large viewing screens, and top-notch cartography outlining international coastlines and including satellite imagery.  Come have a look!

Why an External GPS Antenna?

external GPS antennas

People who rely on GPS devices for any kind of navigation will debate the necessity of an external GPS antenna.  Their GPS may be fine without one until the user is in a strange place and loses GPS signal with no paper maps to be had.

An external GPS antenna can provide a stronger and more consistent signal reception and accuracy regardless of user location, so it may be a wise investment for those who travel outside their device’s known range with any frequency.

Marine GPS chartplotter

Marine GPS chartplotter devices are capable of not only clarifying the location of fishing enthusiasts, but can help locate the fish as well.

Many useful features may be accessible on a machine such as this.  Water temperature, real time flasher performance, a versatile mountain system, and a variety of maps in the GPS portion all make a fishing excursion more productive.  One of the only things a marine GPS chartplotter device cannot do is make the fish bite!

Traveling at Night on the Water

Fishing at night is at times some of the most productive fishing there is. Most of the fisherman I know all have their favorite night time spots. But to get back to these spots at night can sometimes be tricky.

My Garmin GPSMap 545s is a life saver when it comes to night time fishing with it’s large back lit screen it makes night tine navigation a breeze. The split screen is also a big advantage I can still navigate and see whats on the bottom at the same-time.

This is why everyone needs a Garmin gps map 545s this unit will help you in your efforts to save fuel by letting you navigate in the straight line and not wonder all over the ocean.

What is GPS?

marine GPS units

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System. Utilizing a constellation of at least 24 Medium Earth Orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, the system enables a GPS receiver (such as marine GPS units) to determine its location, speed, direction, and time. Other similar systems are the Russian GLONASS, the upcoming European Galileo positioning system, the proposed COMPASS navigation system of China, and IRNSS of India.

A typical GPS receiver calculates its position using the signals from four or more GPS satellites. Four satellites are needed since the process needs a very accurate local time, more accurate than any normal clock can provide, so the receiver internally solves for time as well as position. In other words, the receiver uses four measurements to solve for four variables: x, y, z, and t. These values are then turned into more user-friendly forms, such as latitude/longitude or location on a map, then displayed to the user.

Each GPS satellite has an atomic clock, and continually transmits messages containing the current time at the start of the message, parameters to calculate the location of the satellite, and the general system health. The signals travel at the speed of light through outer space, and slightly slower through the atmosphere. The receiver uses the arrival time to compute the distance to each satellite, from which it determines the position of the receiver using geometry and trigonometry.

Man Overboard Button

Author: Redfish, 06 17th, 2008

We were out fishing in the harbor on a bright sunny Wednesday. The fishing action was not up to par due to a slow moving tide. So we stopped fishing and went joy riding. It was one of those days that you don’t get many of .  The water was slick calm.

We were sitting in the tower and thinking about lunch. As we were riding along I pulled my wallet out of the dry box to see how much money I had in my wallet. Suddenly I hit a large boat wake that came out of no were and when we hit it my wallet flew out of my hand and into the water. Thanks to my Lowrance marine gps with the man over board button. I hit the button and it brought me back to the area were the walet hit the water. And we found the wallet.
